This is a phrase coined by the Roman architect and engineer Vitruvius.
Nothing says “Strength, Utility and Beauty" like Natural Stone.
Unfortunately, contacting your local stone supplier, you might be surprised how much stone is NOT locally sourced. In fact, many of the stone veneers today come from overseas. You got it - “Made in China."
My clients have come to learn that I absolutely love working with natural, and LOCAL materials. As such, I will often research the origin and even production of certain products. Over the years, I have found a number of regional products that help tie a home or structure to it's natural environment.
The architect presumably chose a different stone to cut costs, or because he/she had a relationship with a different supplier. The client should have INSISTED on nothing but the original. Not only is a local business now having to find other ways to make ends meet, but this beautiful product line is temporarily (wishful thinking on my part) unavailable. At the end of the day, I wonder how much was truly saved, as the stone had to be shipped in from somewhere other than locally.
What can you do? Ask about the origin of the stone. And ask for locally sourced products, be it stone, wood or anything else. There will always be a compromise, but at least make an informed decision. The more people ask, the more the suppliers will understand there is a demand.
